The Behind The Scenes Tag

My long time blogging friend Maribeth at Formidable Courage awesomely tagged me to do this extremely tag about the behind the scenes of my writing! Considering I feel pressed for time to do much blogging this week (and probably the upcoming week as well) this is perfect!

Is there a certain snack you like to eat while writing?

I chew gum instead of eating when I write. It feels like eating but I’m not actually making myself fat. XD I love 5’s wintermint gum, I always keep a pack on my desk. 🙂

When do you normally write? Night, afternoon, or morning?

If we’re talking fiction…I almost exclusively write at night. My confidence and focus is higher when I know people aren’t going to walk in on me, so some days I’ll be up very late thinking and writing while everyone else is sleeping. Plus I’m a night person. XD

Where do you write?

In my room, at my little desk in front of my white board. The white board is there for note taking, but its covered in stickers and Disney trading cards and my fandom magnets. I have a Tardis magnet that I just love! XD

How often do you write a new novel?

I start a new one about once a year and continue fiddling with the earlier years’ books as well. I’ve been doing this since I was twelve, starting a book and writing it for a year before continuing with a different one the next (although the early books were all sequels with the same characters, so that was easy. XD )

Do you listen to music while you write?

Oh yes. Music is my caffeine and my ink. My characters sometimes speak through lyrics to communicate to me how they’re feeling, and sometimes I loop those lyrics so I can sink into their emotions and thoughts. Soundtracks from films and anime bring moments and scenes to life in my head and if I listen closely enough, sometimes I can get what I hear on to the page.

My latest musical find: I see raindrops…or glittering fish…or sparkling sunlight…or the condensation created by someone breathing winter air…. IT’S JUST SO HAUNTING AND BREATHY AND PERFECT ASDJFKLA;DKS

Here are a couple of my YouTube playlists if you guys are looking for fresh writing music. (Technically for studying.) (This one is very diverse, have fun! XD )

What do you write on? Laptop or paper?

I’ll go ahead and say it: I can only write on my laptop. I learned to type at an early age, so I have never been fond of clutching a pencil and keeping my rows of words on lines on paper. I love how fast my fingers on the keys can get my thoughts to screen before I loose them. And editing, rereading, storing, and making copies is really easy.

Is there a special ritual you have before or after you write?

Well, I wouldn’t call it a “ritual” but I do try to turn on my rain effects when I know I’ll be writing so my mind will start drifting into the depths of my story or the soul of a particular character I want to write as. Since I work at night, I don’t really use it to shut out noise, but more to shut out silence. Silence is super distracting to me.

What do you do to get into the mood to write?

Like I said, I turn on my rain effects and then I might start playing a certain song that might have helped with the last scene I wrote. I’ll look over what I last wrote too. That helps a lot. 🙂

What is always near the place you write?

My lip balm and hand lotion. Floss is always around my desk for some reason; when I get stuck I floss my teeth and glare at the screen–TMI? XD I generally have a glass of water on my Chewbacca coaster  too (or a soda, if it’s late and I want to stay up till one in the morning.)

Do you have a reward system for your word count?

No, I don’t! I’d never even thought of doing that for myself, probably because word count doesn’t motivate me outside of NaNoWriMo. I sit, I peck at the keys some nights, mostly thinking, and then other nights I’ll pound out pages and pages of words. Generally I just don’t think to look at how much I write.

Is there anything about your writing process that others might not know about?

Sometimes my entire body is moving if I get absorbed in my writing; I’ll rock about in my desk chair if I fall into a good rhythm with the characters and rain effects and music. Sometimes the music is so relevant to a character’s emotion that I’ll stop writing completely and let myself move to sounds I hear. I don’t know why I do that and its only something I noticed about myself recently. It sounds weird, but I’m probably not the only fidgety writer out there. XD

I’m going to tag Emily at Camo and Pearls and Tara at Moonstonemaiden! Have fun girl-friends! ❤

What does your behind the scenes look like?

This Was The Lie (answer to tag)

I got a kick out of reading everyone’s guesses for my “Which One is the Lie” post from yesterday! But you are all anxious to know the answer. XD  I put some thought into my choice of facts–I picked truths that didn’t sound quite right and made up a lie that could be believable with knowledge of other evidence.

Here’s a reminder of the choices:

A. I have seen all the Twilight movies and own several pieces of merchandise.

B. Last summer I developed a phobia for scorpions.

C. The Two Towers if my most favorite LotR’s film.

And the false fact is!…….. *cough* drumroll please *cough*…..

large (7)

Fact B: Last summer I developed a phobia for scorpions.

Yep. False. While indeed, last summer I was stung in my sleep by a scorpion, I did not develop a phobia for them. I purposefully hunt for them in my backyard every few nights with a black light and I do not have conniptions or issues with looking at them or getting very close to them. Phobia free, I’m happy to say!

Fact C is true fact: The Two Towers is my most favorite of the Lord of the Rings movies… because it was basically the most flawless film out of the trilogy. I have so much love for that movie, too. ❤ And yep, this fact is public knowledge, as written here in my Lord of the Rings post. 😀

So…that means that Fact A is also true.

I found it amusing and awesome that Fact A was the most guessed answer as being false! Y’all are awesome. I know a couple of you are thinking at this moment, “THAT FACT IS TRUE? ARE YOU A TWILIGHT FAN? YOU HAVE MERCHANDISE?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?”

I can’t say that I’m a Twilight fan. But I have seen all the movies and I DO have two pieces of Twilight-themed merch! Which basically means I don’t hate it because of reasons.

So here’s the scoop on why I don’t hate the Twilight Series.

Signed poster, Welcome to Forks, and Bella's truck.
Signed poster, Forks sign, and Bella’s truck.

Two years ago I had the pleasure of flying by myself to Washington State to visit family! Not only did my Aunt Rachel share her Twilight movies with me while I was there, but she and my grandma agreed to drive me to visit the real Forks town, where Twilight takes place. (These are photos I took on location!)

It was an entire day trip but very awesome. I got to see the buildings, forests, things from the movie Native America reservations, and La Push beach that the stories took place on. It was and incredible day of sight-seeing!

A huge sign right before reservation line XD and La Push beach.
A huge sign right before reservation line XD and La Push beach.

In Forks, I bought two pieces of Twilight merchandise: a white t-shirt with heart outlines (made from blood of course) with the Forks town name–it is my favorite pajama shirt!–and a baseball with the letter C printed on it, for Cullen. Because the Cullens play super baseball. XD I keep it on my shelf next to my Walking Dead and Disney merchandise so I always remember that I got see the edge of America with my family…and be where vampires and werewolves supposedly roam. It was a wonderful vacation.

As to the movies…the first is the worst. There’s some horribly written dialogue in that movie. Gag me with a spoon. But I rather enjoyed the last film as it had a surprising end twist that just about knocked me from my chair…and most people will miss it because they’ll never watch Twilight. Plus…Anna Kendrick! I can’t say I would recommend Twilight to anyone (*cough* GO WATCH HARRY POTTER INSTEAD *cough*), as the romance/relationship is pretty dysfunctional and immature but I’m glad that I got to watch the movies to connect with my more distant family.

And I guess I can say I’ve stood where a vampire supposedly stood, which is cool. I can’t say that for most other movies I’ve seen. And vampires are awesome…though it’s a general rule that I prefer them as menacing, not sparkling. XD #KindaTeamEdwardButNotReally #IGuessImMoreTeamVampire #TeamVampire

Which One Is The Lie? (a tag)

I always do my tags, it’s just that sometimes they’re late. XD Thank you for tagging me Maribeth! Everyone go check out her awesome blog Formidable Courage! I’ve been looking forward to this one!

  • ~Write down three facts about you – one of them is WRONG. Let your commenters guess in the comments which one is wrong (and tell them in the comments after a while)
  • ~Answer the questions of the person who tagged you – make it all super random and interesting
  • ~ Leave a new list of questions (or just pass on the question list you answered) and tag a few people of your random choice (and say why you tagged them, if you have time!) (Be original and nonsensical in your question-creativity – make the blogging world a cheerful place.  And be disastrously random.)

Okay, here are three facts about me…but one of them is wrong!

A. I have seen all the Twilight movies and own several pieces of merchandise.

B. Last summer I developed a phobia for scorpions.

C. The Two Towers if my most favorite LotR’s film.

Guess which fact is false in the comments–I shall reveal which is false after several guesses. XD

Now, onto answering Maribeth’s questions!

1) Have YOU ever written any fanfiction? Yes, but none from movies or tv shows! When I was twelve I wrote fanfiction for a children’s mystery series called Encyclopedia Brown–I completely stole the characters, added twice as many original characters, and made everyone friends. Each year I wrote a new book with those characters, everyone getting a year older…and this continued for several years! Those stories are very precious to me now and important to my writing story. 🙂

2) Who are your real-life heroes? What do you admire most about them? I had to think about this for awhile. Right now my big hero is my mom. She is very brave… but I don’t have many other real life heroes at the moment. Most of them are fictional at the moment. 🙂

3) What is your motto? What statement(s) inspire you in your day-to-day life? I have this statement hanging on my wall so I can see it every day.

recite-144rsj5This has been one of my most favorite statements for several years!

4) What is your most treasured possession? After counting my computer, as it keeps me in touch with all my friends (and the awesome internet) and all my stories which I keep on my computer, I can probably say my very very old teddy bear. I can not bear to throw him away, even though he is completely unrecognizable (and I mean this in the most literal way.)

5) Strawberry cheesecake…or a slice of Devil’s Food cake with a scoop of ice cream? Always gotta go with chocolate in the end…although cheesecake…cheesecake is awesome.

6) Top three things on your bucket list? Publish a book, work at an aquarium, and dye my hair two colors at once. ^_^ So random and awesome!

large 1

7) If you could go back in time, what advice would you give to your thirteen-year-old self? “You will NOT be married at age eighteen. Focus on something other than marriage now so that you’re not left aimless when that ideal falls apart. But keep learning how to cook, that proves very helpful and delicious later. Work harder at learning your math. Floss your teeth. And keep writing. Those characters will be your only best friends for years, so be sure to tell their story!” Stuff like that, I suppose.

8) What is your family’s heritage? (English, German, Italian, Jewish, Spanish, etc.) My family is such a mixed bag! I have German, Spanish, Irish, Dutch, and American Indian blood in my veins. My family is pretty sure my natural curls come from the Spanish blood, and I’m very proud of it. 😀

9) Favorite social media network? ….I don’t know. I do know that I prefer Twitter over Facebook EVERY DAY but people seem more vocal on Facebook. Uhg. I’m warming to Google+… and Tumblr is always awesome but I’ve never done much “socializing” on Tumblr. Does Pinterest count as a social media network? My online life is a mess.

10) Your favorite place in the whole wide world? (This can be something as big as an entire city or as small as a certain corner of a certain room.) Hmmm do I pick the sweet black and white store of See’s Candy or the germ-filled but comforting library or my messy room or the nearby Harkins theater lobby or the car when we look at Christmas lights…there are too many wonderful places in the world. I can’t pick just one. XD

I’m going to tag just a few people for this tag and I’m going to let people reuse Maribeth’s awesome questions, because I just did a big tag a week or so ago and I don’t feel like making up new ones. 😛 So today I’m tagging:

S from @A Free Mind || Victora @Stori Tori’s Blog || Faith @Princess Faith || Anyone else may steal!

A Lyric Medley

I have a diverse taste in music; my cousin recently asked me what my favorite type of music was and I couldn’t even answer as I didn’t know where to start. I like a bit of everything–well, I’m not really into country or bubble gum pop…but I will listen to pretty much everything else if the song grabs me. So, this lyric/music tag should be really fun to do!

Thank you, Tara, for tagging me with this. I’m so sorry it took me so long to get it finished. 🙂

A song that describes me perfectly.

Roar by Katy Perry. This song resonated with my past when I first heard it, and it’s been my unofficial theme song ever since. “You held me down but I got up/Already brushing off the dust/You hear my voice, you hear that sound/Like thunder, gonna shake the ground.”

The happiest song I know.

Is it too cliche to say Happy by Pharrell Williams? It’s literally called happy. I walked the dogs to this song for weeks because it was so upbeat (and repeated well). “Because I’m happy/ Clap along if you feel like a room without a roof/Because I’m happy/Clap along if you feel like happiness is the truth.” Hee-hee, the lyrics sometimes feel a bit odd but it’s still a really bouncy song.

A song that makes me want to dance.

Flyers by Bradio. I want to jump along the rooftop when I hear this song. It’s still one of the best songs I’ve ever heard, especially when paired with the Death Parade animation. “Everybody, put your hands up!” (Also Shake It Off by Taylor Swift should be mentioned, because that’s the perfect dancing song.)

A song that makes me feel rebellious.

Shatter Me by Lindsey Stirling. This song makes me want to break barriers, smash walls, leave my shell. Violin and dubstep has never sounded so amazing together. Lzzy Hale has a great voice! (Also the music video is incredible.) “Somebody shine a light/I’m frozen by the fear in me/Somebody make me feel alive/And shatter me.”

A song about a story.

This is an unconventional answer, but Lazy Scranton (which, I’m sure, Michael Scott once again plagiarized from a different song) is such a fun rap from The Office–I think of the story of The Office when I think of Michael and Dwight’s incredibly cheesy music video. That show is boss.

“They call it Scranton/What?/The Electric City/Scranton/What?/The Electric City.”

A song that would play during the apocalypse.

The Regulator by Clutch. Maybe it’s because I originally heard it on The Walking Dead, but I see this song playing over an apocalypse in slow motion. I really like how it starts off fairly slow and then builds. “Dream with the feathers of angels stuffed beneath your head/The regulator’s swinging pendulum//Come with me and walk the longest mile.”  (I used to go for runs with this song and pretend zombies were after me. I tell you those were my best workouts.)

A “I can’t even” song.

Don’t Stay by Linkin Park. I can’t even about this song because I detected the voice of my longest running main character singing it when I first hear it–I could hear him sing to his nemesis, his best friend, and himself–bitter, scarred, resentful…the song itself seems like a breakup song, but that’s never how I hear it. “Sometimes I feel I trusted you too well/ Sometimes I feel like screaming at myself/Sometimes I’m in disbelief I didn’t know/Somehow I need to be alone.”

A song that gives me chills every time I hear it.

Chandelier by Sia. I resonated a lot with the hopeless-sounding emotion that this sound resonates. It’s an old, familiar feeling from a few years back, only more beautiful-sounding. “I’m gonna swing from the chandelier, from the chandelier/I’m gonna live like tomorrow doesn’t exist/Like it doesn’t exist/I’m gonna fly like a bird through the night, feel my tears as they dry.”

A song of hope.

The Lost Get Found by Britt Nicole. This was one of the first Christian pop songs I heard as a teenager, and the beat and lyrics struck me and have stayed like a pin with me ever since. “Don’t let your lights go down/Don’t let your fire burn out/’Cause somewhere, somebody needs a reason to believe.”

I’m going to tag: Faith, Emily, Maribeth, S, and Grace. Here are the tag rules for anyone else who’d like to do it–I didn’t follow it very closely to be honest, lol.

The rules:

1. Thank and link back to the person who tagged you.
2. Make a collage that represents your taste in music to go along with your tag post.

3. List a song for each of the 10 questions (or make up your own!) and include your favorite lyrics from that song, if you’d like. If you want to explain why you chose that song, that’s cool too – go crazy with it!

4. Tag at least 5 bloggers
