One of my favorite musicals and recent addition to the Christmas Movies list is White Christmas, starring Bing Crosby. It has great dance numbers (including tap dancing, which I love) and a fun plot line. While more geared as a romance/musical, it has some great humor and comedy.
The main characters are humorous and fun; Wallace and Betty are the older, more mature two who’s romance gets broken for a while by misunderstanding. Davis and Judy are the fun, “Oh, come on!” sort of two who fake an engagement in an attempt to help their sister and best friend get together. The four, pushed to spend a few days together, end up putting together their acts and shows, and after a two hour film, there’s a happy ending including the boys’ undo respect on Christmas to their old army General.
There are a whole bunch of different dance numbers, though many of the show girls are scantily dressed, so I wouldn’t recommend this for guys. 🙂 I still love the singing and dancing, including “The Best Things Happen When Your Dancing” “Sisters” “Minstrol Number” and “The General”.
“Lord help the mister who comes between me and my sister. And Lord help the sister who comes between me and my man!”
Best part of the whole movie is when the guys do the song, lip synching to a pre-recording of the girls’ voices. The difference between the graceful act of The Hayne Sisters and than the choppy, mocking version of Wallace and Davis IS THE MOST HILARIOUS THING EVER!
This is a fun musical that is great for Christmas, though more for girl audiances than boys. I recommend with caution. 🙂
“The best things happen when you’re dancing. Things you would not do at home come naturually on the floor. While dancing soon becomes romancing, when you hold a girl in your arms that you’ve never held before. Even guys with two left feet, come out alright if the girl is sweet; if by chance their cheeks should meet while dancing, proving that the best things happen while they dance!”
